5I love it  Jul 23, 2010
By Joan
This one is great for me.
I have MS & only the use of one hand and my head. We looked at over the bed tables at the local medical supply stores. Their cheapest was well over $100 and had a shorter length table -- I wasn't impressed. Well when you're working or eating in bed or wheelchair, you don't want something that doesn't come fully across. I worried about stability, quality, strength, ease of movement, whether or not it would roll under my adjustable bed. Did I want one that tilted for reading? One with edges to contain spills? I kind of wanted one with a lifting table top that had a vanity underneath.
But I was so pleased when this one arrived. Good quality, well built, stable, rolls easily, fit easily under my bed, easily holds the weight and has the room for what I put on it -- a lap top computer & mouse, book, the weight of my arm resting on it. I use it mostly at night for the convenience of having Kleenex, medicine, TV controls, phone, water etc at my fingertips. I like it higher & angled at night so I don't feel trapped. My husband says it adjusts and rolls easily. With our setup, it has to be on my left side and I have little use of that hand but I can push it out of my way. Attractive dark wood grain vinyl top cleans easily.
What I learned: Tilting for book reading would mean clearing everything off. I like this better. Edges would limit my space and the ease moving things. Vanity types would have the same problem as tilted and are vastly more expensive. More than you wanted to know I'll bet. Sorry I wrote so much.

5Instructions could be improved  Jan 05, 2011
By Jim
And I'll try here to improve on the instructions for this otherwise fine over-bed table.

In step 2 of the Assembly Instructions (on the one sheet of paper other than your Amazon invoice that comes with this product), make sure that when you install the two bolts (numbered 6 on the card the bolts come on), be sure to also install the two washers (also numbered 6 on the card).

In step 3, the instruction says to "INSERT BOLT& NUT (4) TO FASTEN THE TRIP LEVER & TOP BRACKET." It should instead tell you to install the long bolt numbered 14 - not 4 - on the card, and the nut that is numbered 4 (and which is the sole nut that comes with this unit).

Step 4 is self-explanatory. Just make sure that you note that the side of the base you will insert the bolts/bolt-plate/bolt-sleeves assembly into is the side where there are holes for the casters (you'll also notice that the two holes for the bolt assembly on this side are larger than they are on the side that does not have holes for the casters).

Step 5 tells you to install the casters, which is a simply matter of snapping (with a bit of effort) into place. But be sure to note in the diagram that the two casters that have "stoppers" - or we could call them brakes - go on the end of the base closest to the column.

Also note that if after assembling the table you do not release the caster stoppers or brakes, it will not roll, and if you are pushing it on a carpet you may think the problem is the carpet when in fact it is that the stoppers or brakes have not been released to allow the casters to freely roll (I made this mistake and after releasing the stoppers the unit rolled smoothly over a couple of different carpets).

Also in Step 5, you are told to "REPLACE WITH CHROME SCREW (14)." Again, as in step 3, the numbering of the hardware is incorrect. It should tell you to use screw or bolt 4 (the one single screw or bolt in the package that is also the shortest one in the package), NOT the long bolt numbered 14 (which you have to use to connect the trip lever to the column). But replace what with the chrome screw? The instructions are unclear, but here is what they are referring to: on the side of the column with a sticker, just under the table top (when the table is right side up), there is a black screw. (When I assembled my table, I put the sticker side with the black screw above it on the inside of the unit, so that it is under the table. I don't know that it matters and I did not find clarification in the instructions.) The table cannot be raised or lowered until that black screw is removed. Remove it and replace it with the short screw numbered 4 on the card that the hardware comes in.

That's it!

On the table I received and assembled, the rod inside the column rattles when the table is at whatever height I set it to. I fixed this without interfering with the trip lever by gently pushing a small piece of cardboard (from the box the unit came in, in fact) between the bottom of the trip lever and the column. This pushes the trip lever up just enough that it maintains enough contact with the rod so that the rod doesn't rattle around. Ignore this, of course, if the rod on your table doesn't rattle and/or if it does and it doesn't bother you.

I hope my attempt to clarify the instructions that come with this unit were helpful.

I think this is a great table. I use it for using a laptop and at other times an iPad in bed, and in both cases I have small satellite speakers on the back of the table (and a subwoofer on the floor). When I'm done, I can just rotate the table out of the way without having to move electronic equipment around. The table is as sturdy as those I've seen and used in hospital rooms, very nice quality. I recommend it to anyone who can use an over-bed table. Do note, however, that it does not reach over the bed all that far. With the column right up against the side of the bed (a bed frame may subtract inches here depending on the frame), the table extends 27 inches across the top of the bed. If you want the table top to be centered over you, there are going to be 13 1/2 inches (or less if there's a bed frame that prevents you from getting the column right up against the mattress) between the center of your body and the edge of the bed. This means that you have to lay fairly close to the edge of the bed when using the table. (As I recall, some hospital over-bed tables can be raised and lowered and also extended lengthwise. This one cannot be extended lengthwise, but for the price I have no complaints.)

PS - To facilitate moving the table from one house or apartment to another, it may be a good idea to hang onto the black screw that keeps the column down (and thus compact) in an un-extended position. This screw could be taped somewhere under the table top.

5Perfect table  Sep 29, 2007
By N. Girona
Outstanding product. So many different uses. Not only to be used when you are in the bed but everywhere, even if you want to use it for eating when watching TV on the sofa. In my case, I use it in my home office for extra space as a side desk and then I can move it to a different place or leave it right there if I want to eat when I am working. Also, a good feature is that you can adjust it to different heights so really there is no excuse not use it.
I have 2 of them!!!!!Awesome product. I recommend it.

4Warning: Different item  Aug 08, 2009
By R. Davey "RPD"
This is an excellent product for the price. My wife used it while on bed rest, and continues to use it to study in bed or in the living room. Think I'll get one for myself. Like other reviews have indicated, the assembly instructions are dreadful. Thankfully, there are few parts and it's easy enough to figure out with just the diagram.

UPDATE: I ordered a second table for myself. The original vendor no longer provides this product, and the new product is not the same! I should have paid closer attention when Amazon recommended it as an alternative. It seems to be a good product, but it is not the same as the one I wrote my original review for. This one does not tilt, and is designed to approach from one direction only (ie from the right side of the bed, not the left). I'm disappointed. Unfortunately, Amazon will not let me change my original rating.

4Incredible Quality for the Price  Jul 20, 2008
By Joseph Befumo "Joe B"
I purchased this item prior to my wife going in for a spinal fusion. I really didn't expect much for what it cost, but figured if we got a few months out of it, that would be fine. While it's not as sturdy as the ones I saw in the hospital, it's plenty solid for normal use. Despite my wife leaning on it to get in and out of bed, it hasn't given us a bit of trouble. Assembly instructions are a bit vague, but it's not difficult to put together, and once assembled, adjustment is smooth and easy. Shipping was prompt. I would highly recommend it.
